Mary Davenport's VW Van

Mary Davenport's VW Bus

This is Mary Davenport of Hogansville,Ga.I have something that is very different & unique i think. I got a volkswagon bus transporter June of 2007,& i wanted to do something very different to it.Well when we got it ,had been sitting for 14 years. The man said he had it rebuilt before he parked it.I t was very dirty & mildewed. The tires had dry rotted, the injectors had stuck,it would fire on starting fuel.We did that a couple of times just to see what it would do. We ended up having to flush gas tank had some bad gas, fuel pump would not work, put all new lines on it,new fuel pump, battery, spark plugs, wires, changed oil several times. But the injectors were stuck,so we decided to change out to regular carberation ,since the vw dealers said they basically gave nothing but trouble with the injectors. The headliner was suppose to be white, but from the sitting it was black. We bought some MR. CLEAN Erasers, that really does a wonderful job.It really cleaned & turned it back all white after several cleanings. My granduaghter Ashley, said "nana i"ll help you clean it for a quarter a hour.So i went right away & got some stuff to clean it.We worked a couple of months inside & out cleaning, oiling, getting out nut shells from under the seats & out of the duct work. The interior was in wonderful shape ,it was just dirty. There where no tears or wears. We got some new tires to go on it & some new hubcaps & painted the wheels. The tires that was on it looked as if they would pop ,if you looked at them. We finally got it running ,now is the time for my dream to come true.I wanted this bus to have a mural on it of ocean life,i already have a 1972 vw super beetle that i have painted pink & had butterflies airbrushed all over it.I just want to buy & fix up some vws in different schemes. When i was 8 the hippies came to Atlanta, & i seen some of there vehicles,& i told my dad i sure would love to have one of those. He said no i don,t thank so.But after 30 years i got the vw bug & got what i had dreamed of.Sometimes you just have to wait & be patient anything is possible. Now with the bus it,s a total different scheme. I went and talked to MAACO in Newnan,Ga. about donating the paint job of the aqua blue color. The bus was navy blue & tan had surface rust very bad.The body was in pretty good shape.I told Maaco that i put on car shows & cruise-ins & the bus is going to be out & about ,been seen here there & yonder,I think i can get them a lot of work.It would be promoting there work.Since they were new to the area ,they gave it a thought & said they would do it.So the bus was painted aqua blue in January of 2008. I then put a ad on the computer looking for someone that could paint a mural on the bus of ocean life.Just in a few days i had some responses about coming out & taking a look & seeing what we could work out.I was also looking for someone that could donate there work to get it out there & show what they could do,& maybe get some work off of this job.Shaun & Nichole Kerr of Sharpsburg,Ga. was the ones that got the job.He could not donate the job, but for what he did charge,i don,t think i even payed for the paint.I went to the library & got some books on ocean life & aquariums, for him to get some ideas from.He is so good of drawing them out ,& painting them.Nichole helped with the fill-ins.Most of it is handpainted with oils.It took 6 days to do it.The mermaid is my grandaughter Ashley,& the pirate is my grandson Joshua. We have the artic blast on the rear.Pair of dolphins on driver door, driver side aquarium, front sunken ship, mermaid, pirate.Passenger door pair of turtles & lobster, sliding door beach scene,a pair of sharks,coral,reef.&etc. Inside Shaun airbrushed the door panels & wheel cover in blue & done seashells, starfish,& coral. We put in some dark blue carpet,& done the seats in beach towels, with dolphins, fish, penguins,&etc.,to carry inside from outside. Also i have found a 3ft.vw bus that is remote control that i am going to set in the back of the bus .We have put stickers on it with fish on it.Also found a magnet fising pole with some fish to put in it. My husband says,he"s going to make me a sign up to put in the back window,That this bus is not responsible for any accidents. I want to say thanks to all who had a hand in this project for making my dream come true.A very special thanks to my husband Ronald, for allowing me to get the vw"s & fixing them up ,my way. To my grandaugther Ashley, for all her help cleanin & her ideas & thoughts into it. To my brother-in-law Wesley for getting it running,& changing it over. To Scott for putting in carpet. To Tammy Kettyle for seat covers & curtains. To MAACO for the prep paint of the base coat, clear coat of the aqua blue.To my son-in-law for water sanding & clearing. To the painter Shaun & is assistant Nichole for there great art work. This could not have happened if it wasn,t for everybody"s help.I do so appreciate it so much. I hope to buy somemore vw,s & do more scenes.I am a car person all the way.I love going to car shows,i love showing off.I have been hosting & putting car shows on now for 6 years. 1979 VOLKSWAGON TRANSPOTER {FINS & FRIENDS}Finished A pril 2008 Mary Davenport Hogansville,GA.
